Any tips for a new drummer?

I am a self-teaching new drumming and looking for some tips to get through a, probably, common rough patch. My problem is I can't separate my arms from my legs in my head. When the bass needs to be off beat, my arms no longer move on their notes. I'm noticing that playing the drums isn't playing one instrument, it's like playing 4... one for each limb you're using and I haven't even gotten to controlling the high hat yet. When I end up using all my limbs, my head's gonna explode.

So, to all my vet and expert drummers or even the drummers who have just gotten past this problem, how did you do it? How do you play and keep your feet separate from your hands in your head?

Playing Rockband before I got the real set helped me get my arms and legs moving good.

I'd first work on building your hands/feet individually enough to get some confident hits out of each of them. Then try putting your hands together. Play the hi-hat with your hand to 1 2 3 4 in a steady pattern
then try adding your hands on 2 and 4. Once you have that going try adding a bass hit on 1 and 3. Once your pretty confident in that try variations of the beat. See what you can come up with.
