i need bass drum help!?

i have a kit, it is a Yamaha, stage custom, advantage nouveau, and the bass drum is bloody loud. i have it filled up to the top with a blanket, and i can't even tune the front head up very tight, with out it getting too loud. i have been told that i can put rubber practice pads on the batter head but that dose me no good stage. i have the batter head tuned moderately stiff and the front head tuned pretty loose, just enough to stop it form warping. an i don't have the greatest ear for tuning either. so i am looking for suggestions on how to tune my heads up and take the blanket out without killing my ears. and yes i practice with ear plugs.

Well, I can't say that I've ever experienced that problem with any of my sets. Is the blanket material pretty dense. If not try a different one. Make sure the blanket is pressed well up against the batter head. Also if you do not have a small hole cut in the front head you can try that. I always use my 10" splash cymbal to cut around for the hole. The only other thing I can think of is a softer beater for the pedal. Hopefully you aren't using a wooden one now. Also you might want to give the Remo Powersonic bass drum head a try. Check out the video. They are playing the drum with no internal muffling at all.
