Laptop to T.V connection problems- NO SOUND?

Ok so I wanted to connect my Sony Vaio laptop (O.S Windows Vista) to my television so I could watch movies. I went to the shop and the guy told me I needed an VGA cable and an RCA cable, I purchased both. And hooked it all up to my T.V. The picture comes through crystal clear but there's no sound? When I have the RCA cable plugged into my headphone jack, it's silent and when I unplug that, the only sound comes from the laptop itself.

I have tried downloading 'NVIDIA' (a solution I found on Google) but I'm not sure what it does. Also when I install and open the program it says: NVIDIA installer cannot continue

I have also tried going to 'Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Sound' and trying to click 'set default' but that option is greyed out and I can't select it. Help please!!!!

NVIDIA is a graphics program not your proble. you are right with a vga and rca cable. it is unlikely that it is your computer.i plug my rca directly into the aux on my small speakers try that
