What does double chain in second single chain and in each single chain across mean?

I also need to know what sc in each dc across and in top of beg ch-3 means. I am crocheting a scarf and I'm trying to learn how to read patterns.

ur pattern is saying single chain and double chain i am assuming u mean single crochet and double crochet bc there isn't a double chain or single chain stitch there is only a chain stitch. when u are reading patterns u need to know the abbreviations. here is an abbreviation guide to explain each one. http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/abbreviations.php

sc=single crochet and dc=double crochet.

when u say single chain if u are referring to the string of chains u do at the very beginning then u would double crochet in the second chain from hook.

if it is not the row of chains at the beginning but is a following row then ur pattern is telling u to dc in 2nd sc which is double crochet in the 2nd single crochet. u do not double crochet in the 1st single crochet bc normally u chain a certain # at the end of the previous row and then turn ur work to start the next row. these chains count as the 1st stitch of that row. for ex say row 3 is a row of single crochet and after u sc in the last stitch it says chain 3 and turn. when u turn ur work this chain 3 counts as the 1st double crochet so u don't dc in the 1st sc b/c there is technically one there. i hope that's not too confusing.

that being said when it says sc in each dc across and top of ch-3 it means single crochet in each double crochet in the row and ,since that chain 3 counts like a dc, u would single crochet in the top chain of that chain 3 stitch. its a little hard to explain w/ out showing u but u can go to stitchdiva.com or youtube to see tutorials on crocheting.

another bit of info to know is that uk pattern stitches are slightly different than us so if u lie in the us but are doing a uk pattern u would need google a stitch conversion chart which is easy to find. u might also want to join a yahoo crochet group. they are full of crocheters of every experience level and can answer ur questions a lot faster than yahoo answers.
