Can color field painting be on any surface?

I am taking an abstract painting class and the assignment is a color field painting. I have a drum, djembe actually and want to paint on the sides. I see nothing of any specific surface in the assignment. But in general can field painting be on any surface? Thanks

I don't know that there are definite rules regarding colour field painting. I would say it needs to be on a two-dimensional surface. Painting an object in my opinion would not be a colour field painting. Its meaning would be completely different.
