Confused about drum notation! Help me drum majors?

I just bought a Snare Drum rudiment book with cds (Savage Rudimental Workshop).

Ok I understand the note vale - but underneath the notation is " L and R" which of course stands for left and right hand.

example:

RRRRRRR LRLRLRLRLRLRLRLR LLLLLLL
LLLLLLLLL RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL RRRRRR

It made sense at first but why does the left and right alternate? I mean...I'm hitting them at the same time, so why does it matter?

The book says I should "lead" with the opposite hand. What exactly does this mean?

I'm brand new to this...just bought the book....I've played guitar for years.

I'm a music major and you have to alternate because one hand will become stronger than the other if you don't. when you run into 16th notes and 32nds you're going to see why this is important. leading with the opposite hand every time is so you don't get into a habit or starting things like rolls and flams with only one hand.
