What factors should i keep in mind when i buy a drum set?

i have never laid hands on one, and i plan to learn... I dont know if i should buy in parts or whole set at'a'go. Also, what'are different types of drum sets n cymbals... I play guitar and love classic rock. Thanx in advance...

Most drums are sold as sets. A typical 5 piece kit consists of snare, bass and three toms. You purchase cymbals, stands and the throne separately, although you can often find kits that are bundled with everything but the cymbals. I think that I bought a Tama Imperialstar with stands and hardware for $500. Some kits come bundled with cymbals, but you have to be careful because sometimes those are junk. You can often buy someone's used kit pretty cheap.

Generally, most drums can be made to sound ok with decent heads and proper tuning. Look carefully at cymbals and try to hear how they sound before you buy. A good cymbal will sound like a musical instrument when struck. A lousy cymbal will sound like a trash can lid. Stay away from those.

For classic rock, you won't need a massive kit. You can probably play most songs on a four piece kit.

For cymbals, you want minimally, hi hat, ride and a crash. A second crash is nice, but not entirely necessary.
