What are the best brand of drum sticks for hard rock"?

so, my best friend is a drummer. i don't want to ask him anything about drumming because i'm getting him customized drumsticks for christmas.
can you tell me what the best brand is for drumsticks if you play hard rock music? he's pretty amazing with music, but i have no idea what brands are good, and what brands suck.
please let me know!
price can go up to about 50 bucks. please let me know asap!

You'll come out with a great set of sticks for $8 or $12.
Pro-Mark or Vic Firth would be the best brands around, to me.
That said, the brand doesn't mean a whole lot, and your drummer friend probably sees it the same way.
Sticks are sold by length, thickness and head type.
Then there's coated tips for those that like the cymbals a bit brighter.
You need to get your hands on some of his sticks and see what they're like.
Look for any numbers & letters on it.
If he likes A tips, he's not so likely to appreciate some sticks with a B tip.
Hold one up to your elbow to find out how long it is.

EDIT: I took a look at my drummer's sticks. They're 5B's. The 5 is the diameter of the stick, and the B is the size of the head.
That's the sort of stuff you need to know.
