I seem to go through a hell of a lot of drum sticks, any solution?

Drum sticks are pretty expensive, and I seem to break them very often. I mainly play with 5a's, i tried using thicker sticks to remedy this but they just hurt my hands.

I have a feeling it could be my cymbal set up causing them to split, every time it starts as a crack which splits down the whole stick. My Hi-hat I noticed sometimes sits with the bottom hat sticking out so hitting that will definitely damage the sticks a lot, but also could it be my cymbals are set too high or at a bad angle?
