how do you record drums in a home studio setting?

i want to record drums in a home studio.

What i've seen some people do is attach a a small microphone that hangs about an inch over each tom and the snare. There's also a mic in the Mic Hole in the kick drum. First off, is this a good way to record, or would it be better to hang overhead mic's over the drum set. Which way would be best. Remember, I am on a budget.

I want to record my drums on to my computer. I have recording software. What i need to know now is how to hook up the microphones to the computer. What kind of cables do i need, and should i buy some sort of eq or preamp.

ok well best way to do this is to use drum mics and a suitable usb mixer.

Drum mics: best value for money I can suggest are red 5 audio approx 145 quid for a set of seven mics all you need including kick, toms, 2 overheads and snare mics

You will need either a usb or firewire mixer to do this also they can be pricey but you need to have at least an 8 channel mixer as there are 7 drum mics.Personally I use a 16 channel usb mixer.You will need to check reviews to see is there any issues with latency and see has anyone recorded all channels at once without latency issues.

At the end of the day the less channels you have of drums the less control you will have of the overall sound but you will get a cheaper smaller channel mixer if you are willing to accept that fact, or you are willing to record each of the individual drum parts separately(very painful).You will need xlr leads, a few stands, a little patience and have fun experimenting.
