Will oil based satin finish do anything lethal to my guitar?

Will oil based satin finish do anything lethal to my guitar?
Will a oil based satin finish do anything bad to the colour, texture etc of the wood? I have a traditional cherry wood stain (brand new) on the guitar body, but my dad bought me an oil based clear for the guitar, will it be alright, any tips on how to apply it, warnings?

Btw, The body is mahogany and the neck is maple, both would be covered with 3-4 coats of the clear

If it is acoustic, it will change the tone. They make a finish just for stringed instruments.
