What size and type of cymbals should i get?

i want a zildjian A Series Cymbal, either a 17" 16" or an 18" crash. i dont know whether to get a fast crash, thin crash, Medium Thin crash, or rock crash. they all sound the same to me but i want one that will last long and have a great sound. i play a bunch of genres but manly rock. or maybe a sabian or paiste if those are any better.

If you're not looking for a particular tone, then longevity is key. Having a medium weight cymbal will help insure that it will stand the test of time. As far as brands go, any of the 3 mentioned will get you what you need. If you're going with Zildjian I'd check out their new Pitch Black line (pretty edgy) as it looks like they can stand to take a few hits.

One major recommendation I have, regardless of the brand/size/thickness, is that you 'warm up' the cymbals before cranking away on them. I know it sounds silly, but taking cymbals that have been in a cold room/garage and wailing on them out of the gates (like we all love to do) increases the chances of cracking early. All it takes is about 10 minutes of playing on them without really bashing them. Cymbal crescendos work well, but anything that isn't heavy handed will work. This will prolong your cymbal's lives and promote dynamic control as well: technique in dynamics can allow you to get a wide range of tones out of your cymbals (& kit too).
