Who makes a good starter drum kit??

I have played guitar, trumpet and sang in bands for the last 12 years. Therefore, Im not a complete retard when it comes to drum kits. I'm interested in becoming a drummer. I want to know who makes the best quality and performance kit for under $1000. I've looked at Pacific(pdp), Tama, Pearl, Mapex, Yamaha, Ludwig and Sonor. Any others? I know dw makes the best, but Im not paying that much until Im REAL good. Best A's given. Thanks.

You've named most of the decent brands out there.
out of those you mentioned, I'd pick from Ludwig, Tama and Pearl.
If you are looking at $1000 you can probably get a good kit for that.
keep in mind (you probably have) that alot of the kits don't include the hardware and cymbals, which can run a pretty penny!

Another good drum brand I'd forgotten about is Gretsch.

Most of the sets I see are "shell packs" which don't have hardware and cymbals.

The Tama is reasonably priced for a set with cymbals, and would sound just fine, even for a "good" drummer.
Just like any instrument, it's not the quality of the instrument as it is the quality of the person playing it.

I'm also a multi-instrumentalist and DO play the drums as well, and I'd be more than happy with a drum set like the Tama.
