Do the shells of a drum set make a noticeable difference?

I'm a high school freshman and already know I want to major in Musical Performance. I've been playing concert percussion for 4 and a half years and drum set for 2 and i'm finally starting to get decent at set.

I finally thought about it and decided I want a 7-piece set (3 high/mid toms and 2 floor toms). I currently have Pearl Exports (not sure which version - on the shells it says big "Pearl" "EX" then smaller under that "Export Series Drums" "Heat Compression System Shell"). Would it be a better decision to buy another floor tom and mid tom or to sell the exports (theyre in good condition and on Musicians Friend new, theyre about 900) and buy a 7-piece?

Yes. All other things being equal: same size drum, same heads, same snares, same tuning etc., you can tell a difference between various shell types. That is not to say one is better than another, but you can hear a difference in sound between types of wood shells.

As far as the number of drums in your setup, remember that when you're out gigging you have to schlep all that stuff in and out of vehicles, set it all up and tear it all down. Also bear in mind that an awful lot of great music has been made using a 4-piece kit and a couple cymbals. Just some food for thought from a guy that's been a working pro for 50 years.
