Is the Ludwig element 6-piece power shell pack a better buy than the OCDP venice?

Is the Ludwig element 6-piece power shell pack a better buy than the OCDP venice drum kit? the ludwig is made of birch and poplar, and the ocdp venice is made of basswood. im not sure which to get, they are both around $500.

looking purely at the wood materials, i would go with ludwig. in general, basswood is the cheapest wood used in drum making. it isnt very good quality and it is very cheap. birch is quite a good material for drums shells. poplar, not so much. but what they do in these dual wood kit, is the make the inner plies out of poplar, to cut down on cost, then the outer plies are made of birch. since the sound resonantes off the outer plies, you get the acoustic benefits of a birch drum, combined with the cost of a cheaper drum.
