switching from 4/4 time signature to 12/8 and then 6/8?

I have to play a piece called Symphony No. 5 Finale for my Snare Drum audition and I'm having a hard time. The piece starts off in 4/4 time with a tempo of 144. Then later in the song it goes to 12/8 at one dotted quarter note=160 b.p.m. then it switches to 6/8 still at one dotted quarter note=160. it then goes to 12/8 for three measures, and then to 4/4 at 172 bpm. then to 6/8 again with the dotted quarter note=172. can someone help with how I can transition the counting because i'm having a really difficult time!

First of all, I would be sure to start at a much slower tempo everywhere, perhaps even cut each in half (so start at 72 in the 4/4).

Also, listen to a recording if you can find one! :O Anyone I've ever talked to loves when musicians listen to recordings before auditions.

Do you understand how to count each section on its own at the specified tempos? Is it just putting them together thats difficult? If so, I would get out a metronome and practice each section alone until its drilled into your mind at the right tempo, then put them together one at a time.
