How do i tune my floor tom?

My floor tom has been sounding "out of wack" and everytime it try to fix it it sounds worse.. right now it sounds to tight and has a ringing after i hit it. and if i loosen it it sounds too low and loose. so what should i do and how?? thanks in advance!!

With the head fully loose, try this...

put tension on the head by pressing down on the center of it with your hand. Then start tightening the lugs in a cross-pattern, tighten just past the point where you start to feel resistance.from the lugs. Then check the sound and tighten the lugs in the same cross pattern, turning each lug about a quarter of a turn. Repeat until the tone is to the point you want it at. It sounds like you want a low tone with slight echo, the the head should be fairly loose, but not so much where there are loose lugs or wrinkles in the head.

If there is a bottom head then try to keep that one pretty tight. If you still get that loose sound try to tighten the damper on the tom so it presses harder against the head, or you might want to invest in muffle to absorb some of the shock.
