What is the easiest way to make a thin wood stick stronger?

Please keep in mind i am in Grade 8 so please keep it simple and cheap!

Simple question, but not an easy one.
Probably the best thing to look into is the type of wood, considering the difference between say pine, cheap and readily available, but pretty soft and weak, versus say hickory or ash, which are much stronger, used for things like tool handles or bows (as in bow and arrow).
Ancient peoples sometimes heat-treated wood over a fire to harden it, for spears and arrows.
These days, there are chemicals that can be applied, from boiled linseed oil to epoxy that would make a difference. As Vulcan says, laminating, or gluing together, even thinner pieces can greatly increase the strength in a given size.
