First Bass: Yamaha RBX170 vs Ibanez GSR190?

I want to start bass so need a first guitar. Have narrowed it down to these two so am wondering which is better? The only thing is the Ibanez comes in a starter pack so all the accessories would come in the box which will be alot less hassle.

Both are excellent instruments for starting. They are well made. Some will like the Yamaha better, some will the Ibanez. It's a matter of taste.

Ludicrous as it may sound, I would tell you to get the one with the best looks for you. If you decide to continue with the instrument, you will figure out what your particular tone and playing style will be, therefore you will move on to something that suits you better soon enough.

A word about starter packages. The amplifier is basically a toy. It will not last long, and will certainly not be powerful enough to play out. When you learn enough to play with a band, that little toy amp will prove to be useless. I bet you will be looking for a better amp in less than a month! Be aware that your instrument is not the bass, but the bass and the amp.

The cable is normally very low quality, and too short, so you will have to replace it sooner or later. The same with the strap; you will want a better, sharper looking one. Some packages also bring a tuner. It is also a toy. The only thing that will really last in the package is the bass.

Whatever you decide to purchase, take it to the guitar shop so they check the string height and intonation. Also put in new strings.

Just go for the looks. For now. Best wishes.
