Designing a effective crash car with crumple zones?

In our design and construction class, we have to design a small crash car that will hold 4 small 5/8" paintball passengers, and will then be run into a wall at speeds of 50-60 mph, on compressed carbon dioxide. The passengers should survive. Could someone either a) give me an idea as to what the basic design should be, or b) point me to a site that explains the physics of a car crash? And how to most effectively design a car?

The deflection of material requires energy. This dissipates the kinetic energy of the car in the crash situation and allows the passengers to survive. This energy absorption has the affect of spreading the deceleration of the crash over a longer distance and a longer duration, which lowers the forces experienced by the passengers (even though they may experience these lower forces for a longer duration).

Experiment with poster board. You will find that you get different results from bending failures and buckling failures. Using this information, you should be able to use bending and buckling in combination to absorb enough energy to assure the survival of your passengers.
